શીલાબહેન અમદાવાદના પાટડ નગરમાં રહે છે. તેઓ બે રૂમના મકાનમાં રહે છે, અને તેમાંના એક રૂમનો ઉપયોગ ત્યાં બેસીને ચણિયા-કબજા પર કુંદન ચોડવાનું કામ કરવા માટે કરે છે. એક કબજાનું કામ પૂરું કરતા તેમને બે થી ત્રણ કલાક લાગે છે, કબજાના કાપડને કુંદન ચોડીને તૈયાર કરવા માટે કેટલું કામ કરવું પડે છે એના આધારે તેઓ નંગ દીઠ 15 થી 25 રુપિયા કમાય છે. ઠેકેદાર મારફત આપવામાં આવતું આ કામ હંમેશ એકધાર્યું હોતું નથી.<\/p>

તેમને કેટલું કામ મળશે એ નક્કી કરવામાં તહેવારોની મોસમ, ખાસ કરીને નવરાત્રીનો સમય, મહત્વનો ભાગ ભજવે છે. શીલાબહેન કહે છે, “તહેવારોની મોસમ પહેલા હું રાત્રે 12-12 વાગ્યા સુધી કામ કરું છું. અમારી પાસે પુષ્કળ ઓર્ડર હોય છે અને ચાર પૈસા વધુ કમાઈને અમે અમારે માટે ખરેખર થોડીઘણી બચત કરી શકીએ એવો કોઈ સમય હોય તો એ આ જ સમય હોય છે.”<\/p>

શીલાબહેન માટે તેમના ઘરની આ નાનકડી જગ્યામાં કામ કરવું સહેલું નથી. તેમના જેવા ઘણા કારીગરો અનધિકૃત કામચલાઉ વસાહતોમાં રહે છે, જ્યાં મોટેભાગે છત અને દિવાલો કાયમી હોતી નથી, મૂળભૂત સેવાઓ અને સુવિધાઓનો અભાવ હોય છે. ઉદાહરણ તરીકે, નબળી ગટર વ્યવસ્થાને કારણે ચોમાસામાં ઘરમાં પાણી ભરાઈ જાય છે, પરિણામે કાચા માલને નુકસાન પહોંચે છે.<\/p>

આબોહવા પરિવર્તનની સાથે આત્યંતિક હવામાન વધતી જતી ઘટનાઓ તેમના ઘર પર અને પરિણામે તેમના કામ પર સીધી અસર પહોંચાડે છે. શીલાબહેન કહે છે, “અમારા ઘરની છત એસ્બેસ્ટોસની છે, અને તેથી એ પુષ્કળ ગરમ થઈ જાય છે. પરિણામે ઘરમાં બેસવાનુંય મુશ્કેલ બની જાય છે, તેમ છતાં કામ કર્યા વિના અમારે છૂટકો નથી. મારા કામમાંથી થતી મહત્વની આવક જતી કરવાનું મને પોસાય તેમ નથી.” ઘરની અંદર વધુ પડતી ગરમીને કારણે તેમની કામ કરવાની ક્ષમતાને અસર પહોંચે છે. તેમણે વચ્ચેવચ્ચે કામ કરવાની જગ્યા બદલવી પડે છે અને જ્યારે ઠંડક હોય ત્યારે મોડી રાત સુધી કામ કરવું પડે છે.  <\/p>

કામને લઈને ચોમાસામાં વળી અલગ પડકારો હોય છે. ચોમાસામાં ગુંદરને સૂકાતા વધુ સમય લાગે છે અને ઘરમાં ભેજને કારણે કપડાંને નુકસાન થાય છે પરિણામે કામ કરવું મુશ્કેલ બને છે. આ વિસ્તારમાં ગટરની પાઈપો ન હોવાને કારણે ઘરમાં પાણી ઝમે છે, એ કારણે પણ ઝાઝું કામ થઈ શકતું નથી. શીલાબહેન ઉમેરે છે, “ચોમાસા દરમિયાન હું કામ લેતી નથી કારણ તેમાં નફા કરતાં વધારે તો માલનું નુકસાન થઈ જાય છે. ને પરિણામે ઠેકેદાર પણ ઝટ લઈને અમારી પર વિશ્વાસ કરતા નથી.”<\/p>

આ જ કામ કરતા પાટડ નગરના બીજા એક મહિલા માલતીબહેન કહે છે, “અમારા પડોશની માળા (મોતીના હાર) બનાવતી મહિલાઓ બપોરના સમયે ક્યારેક-ક્યારેક સાર્વજનિક મંદિરમાં અથવા છાંયાવાળી શેરીઓમાં કામ કરવા માટે બેસી જાય છે. પરંતુ અમે આવું કરી શકતા નથી કારણ કે કાપડના ટુકડાઓ એક જગ્યાએથી બીજી જગ્યાએ લઈ જવાનું સહેલું નથી. એકવાર કુંદન ચોડ્યા પછી કપડાને સૂકાવા દેવા માટે સીધું પાથરીને રાખવું પડે છે.<\/p>

આ વિસ્તારની બીજી મહિલાઓ માળા બનાવવી, કપડાં સીવવા કે પછી ચમચીઓ પેક કરવી, જેવા કામો કરે છે. કુંદન ચોડવાના કામ કરતા ઓછા પૈસા મળતા હોવા છતાં રુક્મિણીબહેન માળા બનાવવાનું કામ કરે છે. તેઓ કહે છે, “કુંદન ચોડવાનું કામ બધા કરી શકતા નથી. (ઘરમાં આ કામ કરું તો પછી) હું કપડા ક્યાં સૂકવું? મારા ઘરમાં તો બેસીને કામ કરવા માટે જગ્યા જ નથી.” <\/p>
