લગ્ન પછી હું અમદાવાદ રહેવા ગઈ ત્યારે હું અને મારા પતિ મેઘાણીનગરમાં મદ્રાસીની ચાલીમાં રહેતા હતા. તે ગુજરાતની એક નાની ઝૂંપડપટ્ટી છે. અમને પીવાના સ્વચ્છ પાણી કે વ્યક્તિગત શૌચાલય જેવી જરૂરી સુવિધાઓની પહોંચ નહોતી, ન તો અમારી પાસે વીજળી હતી. જે ઘરોમાં વીજળીનું મીટર હતું તેઓ ગેરકાયદેસર રીતે બીજા 10-15 ઘરોને કનેક્શન વેચતા હતા. આમાંના મોટાભાગના ઘરોમાં ત્રણથી ચાર ઇલેક્ટ્રિક પોઈન્ટ હતા અને તેઓ સ્થાનિક સપ્લાયરને 400 રુપિયા (પોઈન્ટ દીઠ 100 રુપિયા) ફી ચૂકવતા હતા.<\/p>

આ ગેરકાયદેસર જોડાણોથી વાકેફ વિજિલન્સ ડિપાર્ટમેન્ટ – તકેદારી વિભાગ – આ વિસ્તારમાં વારંવાર દરોડા પાડતો હતો. પરિણામે અમારા જોડાણો નિયમિતપણે કાપી નાખવામાં આવતા હતા. આ વિસ્તારની ઘણી ઘણી મહિલાઓની જેમ હું પણ ઘેરથી કામ કરતી હતી. હું બિંદીઓ (ચાંલ્લા) પેક કરીને રોજના 100-150 રુપિયા કમાતી હતી. જોકે, વીજળી ગુલ થઈ જાય તે દિવસોમાં હું કામ કરી શકતી નહોતી, પરિણામે મને દર મહિને 400-500 રુપિયાનું નુકસાન થતું હતું.<\/p>

પરિવારોને કેટલીક મૂળભૂત સુવિધાઓ પૂરી પાડતા બિનનફાકારક મહિલા હાઉસિંગ ટ્રસ્ટ (એમએચટી) સાથે પણ હું કામ કરતી હતી. 2001 માં તેમના સ્લમ ઇલેક્ટ્રિફિકેશન પ્રોગ્રામ<\/a> – ઝૂંપડપટ્ટી વીજળીકરણ કાર્યક્રમ – દ્વારા અમે 1 લાખ ઘરોમાં મીટરવાળા વીજળી જોડાણો મેળવ્યા. જોકે કાયદેસર મીટરવાળા જોડાણો મેળવ્યા પછી પણ લોકો તેમના લાઇટ અને પંખાનો મુક્તપણે ઉપયોગ કરવાનું ચાલુ રાખતા હતા કારણ કે તેઓ 400 રુપિયાની માસિક ફીથી ટેવાયેલા હતા. પછીથી તેમના બિલ બમણા થઈ ગયા હતા એ જોઈને તેઓ ચોંકી ગયા હતા.<\/p>

અમારા બિલ આટલા ઊંચા કેમ આવતા હતા અને તેને ઘટાડવા માટે અમે શું કરી શકીએ તે સમજવા મેં એમએચટીના એનર્જી ઓડિટર્સ<\/a> માટેના ત્રણ દિવસના તાલીમ કાર્યક્રમમાં ભાગ લીધો. ઘરની લાઇટિંગ (પ્રકાશ) અને કુલિંગની (ઠંડકની) જરૂરિયાતોનો અભ્યાસ કેવી રીતે કરવો, માસિક વીજ ખર્ચની સમીક્ષા કેવી રીતે કરવી અને તેને ઘટાડવાના રસ્તાઓ કેવી રીતે સૂચવવા એ હું શીખી. ઘરના દરવાજા અને બારીઓનું સ્થાન, સૂર્યપ્રકાશની દિશા, છતની ઊંચાઈ અને તેના ઇલેક્ટ્રિક પોઈન્ટની સંખ્યા અને સ્થાન ધ્યાનમાં લઈને – ઘરનો નકશો કેવી રીતે તૈયાર કરવો એ પણ હું શીખી.<\/p>

એનર્જી ઓડિટર (ઊર્જા હિસાબ-તપાસનીશ) તરીકે મેં લોકોના ઘરોનું ઓડિટ કરવા ઘેર ઘેર જવાનું શરૂ કર્યું. લોકોને વોટેજ અને ઊર્જા કાર્યક્ષમતાનો ખ્યાલ સમજવામાં મદદ મળે એ માટે હું વોટમીટર અને ત્રણ-પિન પ્લગ સોકેટ અને સ્વીચ સાથેનું સુટકેસ જેવું બોક્સ સાથે લઈને જતી. હું ઘરના બલ્બ્સ અને ફ્રિજ અથવા ટીવી જેવા ઇલેક્ટ્રિક ઉપકરણોને વોટમીટરમાં પ્લગ કરતી જેથી તેમના વોટેજનું સચોટ વાંચન મળી રહે. તેઓ જે ગરમી ઉત્સર્જન કરતા બલ્બ્સનો ઉપયોગ કરતા હતા તેના કરતાં એલઇડી બલ્બ્સ વધુ તેજસ્વી અને વધુ ઊર્જા-કાર્યક્ષમ હતા એ બતાવવા માટે હું એલઇડી બલ્બ્સ પણ સાથે લઈને જતી.<\/p>

ઘરના કદના આધારે હું નાના- નાના ફેરફારો કરવાની ભલામણ કરતી. ઉદાહરણ તરીકે, મોટાભાગના લોકો ટ્યુબલાઇટનો ઉપયોગ કરતા હતા, પરંતુ તે તેમના રૂમના ફક્ત એક ભાગને પ્રકાશિત કરતી. હું તેના બદલે બલ્બ્સનો ઉપયોગ કરવાની ભલામણ કરતી – એક રૂમમાં 8 વોટનો અને બીજા રૂમમાં 5 વોટનો. જો કોઈ મહિલા ઘેરથી કામ કરતી હોય તો હું 100 વોટની ટ્યુબલાઇટને બદલે શંકુ આકારના લેમ્પમાં 5 વોટનો બલ્બ વાપરવાનું સૂચન કરતી. આનાથી તેમને કામ કરતી વખતે કેન્દ્રિત પ્રકાશ મળી રહેતો, એટલું જ નહીં તેમની આંખો પણ ઓછી ખેંચાતી.<\/p>

ઓડિટને અંતે હું ભલામણ કરેલા ઉત્પાદનોની યાદી તેમની સાથે શેર કરતી જેથી તેમના હાલના ઉત્પાદનો કામ કરવાનું બંધ કરી દે ત્યારે તેઓ તેને એ ભલામણ કરાયેલા ઉત્પાદનોથી અપગ્રેડ કરી શકે. જે લોકોએ આ ફેરફારો કર્યા તેમને તેમના વીજળી બિલમાં તફાવત દેખાયો અને તેમણે સમુદાયના બીજા લોકોને અમારા વિશે જણાવ્યું. પછીથી તેઓ મને તેમના ઘરોનું ઓડિટ કરવા માટે બોલાવવા લાગ્યા, મારા આ કામને કારણે મને એક ઉપનામ મળ્યું: લાઇટવાળી બેન.<\/p>
