{"id":61274,"date":"2024-11-14T11:30:00","date_gmt":"2024-11-14T06:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/idronline.org\/?post_type=article&#038;p=61274"},"modified":"2026-05-05T18:27:55","modified_gmt":"2026-05-05T12:57:55","slug":"idr-explains-nature-based-solutions","status":"publish","type":"article","link":"https:\/\/idronline.org\/kn-in\/article\/climate-emergency\/idr-explains-nature-based-solutions\/","title":{"rendered":"IDR Explains | Nature-based Solutions"},"content":{"rendered":"<?xml encoding=\"utf-8\" ?><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-why-are-we-talking-about-nature-based-solutions\">Why are we talking about Nature-based Solutions?<\/h3><p><\/p><p>The era we live in is sometimes referred to as the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhm.ac.uk\/discover\/what-is-the-anthropocene.html#:~:text=We%20are%20living%20in%20a,water%2C%20organisms%20and%20the%20atmosphere.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Anthropocene<\/a> because human (<em>anthropos<\/em> in Greek) activity has had a significant impact on the planet. Our actions have led to the degradation of forests, wetlands, coastlines, polar ice caps, and agricultural land, along with the destruction of habitats, extinction of many species, and loss of biodiversity. By burning fossil fuels such as coal and gas, we are emitting carbon dioxide, and other greenhouse gases, into the atmosphere. This is causing the earth to warm at unprecedented rates and resulting in frequent natural disasters, heatwaves, and insecurity about food and water. Marginalised communities, who contribute the least to the climate crisis, bear <a href=\"https:\/\/www.worldbank.org\/en\/topic\/social-dimensions-of-climate-change\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">the brunt<\/a> of this because extreme weather events and food, water, and livelihood security affect them most.<\/p><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-are-nature-based-solutions\">What are Nature-based Solutions?<\/h3><p>Nature-based Solutions (NbS) are initiatives that respond to the climate crisis by harnessing the power of natural systems such as forests, water bodies, wetlands, or urban green spaces. NbS aim to protect, manage, and restore ecosystems&mdash;complexes of living organisms co-existing and interacting with one another&mdash;to solve for societal challenges. They encompass a broad range of strategies to reduce flooding; <a href=\"https:\/\/india.mongabay.com\/2022\/06\/explainer-what-are-carbon-sinks\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">absorb carbon<\/a>; preserve biodiversity, and provide fresh air, clean water, and sustainable agriculture with an eye on equity and justice for vulnerable communities.<\/p><p>Natural ecosystems can mitigate climate change, such as through forests and mangroves that sequester carbon dioxide and reduce global warming. They also help us adapt to climate change, such as through wetlands that reduce the impact of floods or man-made landscapes such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.merriam-webster.com\/dictionary\/bioswale\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">bioswales<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.archdaily.com\/995047\/what-are-green-corridors\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">green corridors<\/a> that reduce temperature. Blue carbon is sequestered by coastal and marine ecosystems, such as mangroves, seagrasses, and salt marshes, and green carbon is stored by terrestrial ecosystems, including forests and other land-based vegetation.<\/p><div class=\"idron-article-in-content\" style=\"margin-bottom: 15px;\" id=\"idron-1722402875\"><a href=\"https:\/\/idronline.org\/what-is-idr-answers\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"What is IDR Answers Page Banner\"><img src=\"https:\/\/idronline.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/What-is-IDR-Answers-Page-Banner-1.png\" alt=\"What is IDR Answers Page Banner\"  srcset=\"https:\/\/idronline.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/What-is-IDR-Answers-Page-Banner-1.png 1250w, https:\/\/idronline.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/What-is-IDR-Answers-Page-Banner-1-300x60.png 300w, https:\/\/idronline.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/What-is-IDR-Answers-Page-Banner-1-1024x205.png 1024w, https:\/\/idronline.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/What-is-IDR-Answers-Page-Banner-1-150x30.png 150w, https:\/\/idronline.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/What-is-IDR-Answers-Page-Banner-1-768x154.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1250px) 100vw, 1250px\" width=\"1250\" height=\"250\"   \/><\/a><\/div><p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/iucn.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">International Union for the Conservation of Nature<\/a> (IUCN), a network of governments and civil society organisations, defines NbS as &ldquo;actions to protect, sustainably use, manage and restore natural or modified ecosystems, which address societal challenges, effectively and adaptively, providing human well-being and biodiversity benefits&rdquo;. The European Commission has its own definition: &ldquo;Living solutions inspired by, continuously supported by, and using Nature, designed to address various societal challenges in a resource efficient and adaptable manner and to provide simultaneously economic, social and environmental benefits.&rdquo;<\/p><p>Both definitions draw attention to the societal goals of ecological action. To qualify as an NbS, a project should not only bring environmental and biodiversity benefits but also aid the welfare of human beings. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/news-room\/fact-sheets\/detail\/climate-change-and-health#:~:text=Research%20shows%20that%203.6%20billion,diarrhoea%20and%20heat%20stress%20alone.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Research<\/a> shows that approximately 3.6 billion people are vulnerable to the impact of the climate crisis. Exclusionary NbS actions that disregard the rights of affected communities, especially indigenous and local, perpetuate the alienation of peoples from nature and their land.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><picture><source media=\"(max-width: 1366px)\" srcset=\"https:\/\/idronline.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/Untitled-design-4-1-768x510.webp\"><source media=\"(max-width: 1540px)\" srcset=\"https:\/\/idronline.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/Untitled-design-4-1.webp\"><source media=\"(max-width: 2000px)\" srcset=\"https:\/\/idronline.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/Untitled-design-4-1.webp\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/idronline.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/Untitled-design-4-1.webp\" alt=\"a beautiful lush green scene in Thekkady-nature-based solutions\" width=\"1024\" height=\"680\"><\/source><\/source><\/source><\/picture><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Nature-based Solutions can address the climate challenge in a synergetic and cost-effective manner. | Picture courtesy: Shreya Adhikari<\/figcaption><\/figure><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-how-do-nature-based-solutions-help\">How do Nature-based Solutions help?<\/h3><p>Preserved and restored ecosystems can mitigate climate change by absorbing carbon dioxide emitted by human activity and slow down global warming. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.org\/en-us\/what-we-do\/our-insights\/perspectives\/natures-make-or-break-potential-for-climate-change\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Research<\/a> indicates that NbS can help us achieve up to 37 percent of the emission reduction that is required to limit global temperature increase to under 2 degrees C. Moreover, NbS can aid resilience and adaptation to climate change by decreasing the impact of natural disasters on vulnerable communities. Greening of cities can reduce the impact of heatwaves and coastal conservation can protect coastal areas from cyclones. Landscape restoration, mangroves, grasslands, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.blm.gov\/sites\/default\/files\/documents\/files\/Library_BLMTechnicalReference1737-22.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">riparian restoration<\/a>, sustainable agriculture, trees, wetlands, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.epa.gov\/heatislands\/using-green-roofs-reduce-heat-islands\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">green roofs<\/a>, and green drainage systems can regulate water flows, buffer floods, reduce air and water pollution, cool extreme temperatures, ensure food and nutritional security, improve local livelihoods, and enhance the resilience and adaptive capacities of local communities. Nature-based Solutions can address the climate challenge in a synergetic and cost-effective manner.<\/p><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-is-the-history-of-this-concept\">What is the history of this concept?<\/h3><p>In 1992, member states of the United Nations signed up for an <a href=\"https:\/\/unfccc.int\/process\/the-convention\/history-of-the-convention#Essential-background\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">international treaty<\/a> to address climate change. Currently 197 nations are part of this agreement under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCC). The apex body of the UNFCC, known as the Conference of the Parties or COP, meets every year to further its climate objectives. In 2009, when the COP meeting was held in Copenhagen, Denmark, IUCN presented a paper seeking to &ldquo;make full use of Nature-based Solutions in the post-2012 climate change regime&rdquo;.&nbsp;The concept of NbS gained currency after this paper. In 2016, IUCN published a formal report that has served as the guide for NbS ever since. It has extrapolated its report into a <a href=\"https:\/\/portals.iucn.org\/library\/node\/49070\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Global Standard<\/a>, which lays out what comes under the umbrella term and the benchmarks used to assess NbS projects. Most of the solutions included are previously known concepts that are reframed to integrate environmental and human concerns and provide alternatives to top-down technocratic fixes.<\/p><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-do-nature-based-solutions-look-like-in-practice\">What do Nature-based Solutions look like in practice?<\/h3><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading secondlevel\" id=\"h-1-reforestation-afforestation-sustainable-forestry\">1. Reforestation, afforestation, sustainable forestry<\/h3><p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.iucn.org\/resources\/issues-brief\/forests-and-climate-change\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Forests absorb<\/a> about a third of the carbon dioxide&mdash;2.6 billion tonnes&mdash;emitted by the burning of fossil fuels each year. In 2006, the <a href=\"http:\/mudancasclimaticas.cptec.inpe.br\/~rmclima\/pdfs\/destaques\/sternreview_report_complete.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Stern Review<\/a> pointed out that the loss of forests contributed more to global emissions each year than the transport sector.<\/p><div class=\"idron-content\" id=\"idron-640981280\"><a href=\"https:\/\/idronline.org\/donate\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"donate banner\"><img src=\"https:\/\/idronline.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/Donate-banner-1.jpg\" alt=\"donate banner\"  srcset=\"https:\/\/idronline.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/Donate-banner-1.jpg 1250w, https:\/\/idronline.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/Donate-banner-1-300x60.jpg 300w, https:\/\/idronline.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/Donate-banner-1-1024x205.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/idronline.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/Donate-banner-1-150x30.jpg 150w, https:\/\/idronline.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/Donate-banner-1-768x154.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1250px) 100vw, 1250px\" width=\"1250\" height=\"250\"   \/><\/a><\/div><p>In 2021, <a href=\"https:\/\/pib.gov.in\/PressReleasePage.aspx?PRID=1906388\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">India&rsquo;s forest cover<\/a> was 8,09,537 square kilometres, which is 24.62 percent of the country&rsquo;s total area. To improve its carbon sink, India has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.weforum.org\/agenda\/2022\/03\/forest-restoration-india-ambitious-climate-goals\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">pledged<\/a> to increase this to 33 percent by 2030. Forest cover is increased with afforestation, which involves planting trees in areas that have not been forested, and reforestation, where trees are planted in degraded forests. &nbsp;<\/p><p>Sustainable forestry balances a community&rsquo;s need for forest products and benefits while keeping the forest healthy for future generations. It often includes <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foei.org\/what-we-do\/forests-and-biodiversity\/community-forest-management\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">community-based forest management<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/topics\/earth-and-planetary-sciences\/selective-logging\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">selective logging<\/a>, and prevention of forest fires.<\/p><p>The Indian government has pursued afforestation and reforestation through schemes such as the National Mission on Green India and the National Afforestation Programme. It has launched a <a href=\"https:\/\/indianexpress.com\/article\/india\/centre-launches-forest-certification-scheme-to-counter-foreign-agencies-9073713\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">certification<\/a> scheme for those who use sustainable practices to manage forests and forest products. The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fra.org.in\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Forest Rights Act<\/a> of 2006 empowers village assemblies to manage forest areas. For <a href=\"https:\/\/idronline.org\/article\/environment\/200-years-of-afforestation-what-can-india-learn\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">example<\/a>, in Gadchiroli district, Maharashtra, gram sabhas have restored degraded forests and managed them as a sustainable source of tendu leaves.<\/p><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading secondlevel\" id=\"h-2-coastal-protection-and-restoration\">2. <strong>Coastal protection and restoration<\/strong><\/h3><p>The global coastal area accounts for 10 percent of the <a href=\"https:\/\/wwf.ca\/habitat\/oceans\/coastal-habitat-protection\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">ocean environment<\/a> but houses 90 percent of marine species. Coastal habitats can store carbon and counter sea-level rise, coastal erosion, and storm surges. Restoring wetlands, including marshes, swamps, reefs, and mangroves, can protect coastlines.<\/p><p>India&rsquo;s <a href=\"https:\/\/factly.in\/data-indicates-greater-coastal-erosion-on-the-east-coast-of-india\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">coastline<\/a> spans 7,500 kilometres and its erosion affects the lives of 14 percent of its population that lives in coastal districts. According to <a href=\"https:\/\/factly.in\/data-indicates-greater-coastal-erosion-on-the-east-coast-of-india\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">government data<\/a>, between 1990 and 2018, 33.6 percent of the country&rsquo;s coastline underwent varying degrees of erosion.<\/p><p>NbS involves the protection and management of coastal ecosystems and is different from conventional engineering solutions, such as building <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ctc-n.org\/technologies\/sea-walls#:~:text=Seawalls%20are%20hard%20engineered%20structures,erosion%20(French%2C%202001).\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">seawalls<\/a>. For instance, planting mangroves reduces the impact of storms on human lives and economic assets, and provides a habitat for fish, birds, and other plants. In Gujarat&rsquo;s Jambusar taluka, the local community has set up a <a href=\"https:\/\/india.mongabay.com\/2023\/06\/bioshields-nature-based-solution-to-climate-change\/#:~:text=The%20initiative%20is%20developing%20a,plants%20on%20the%20village%20side.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">coastal bioshield<\/a>, which includes mangrove species on the seaside, salt-resistant trees in the middle, and fodder plants closer to the village. A <a href=\"https:\/\/india.mongabay.com\/2020\/01\/a-restored-wetland-brings-hope-to-some-in-flood-and-drought-prone-chennai\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">restored wetland<\/a> in Chennai increases the local community&rsquo;s flood resilience while improving water supply and quality. In 2023, West Bengal, which is home to 40 percent of our mangrove forests, set up a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thehindu.com\/news\/national\/other-states\/wb-government-announces-mangrove-cell-on-international-day-of-mangrove-ecosystem\/article67123522.ece\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">special cell<\/a> to monitor and manage them.<\/p><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading secondlevel\" id=\"h-3-sustainable-agriculture\">3. Sustainable agriculture<\/h3><p>Sustainable land and water management are crucial to farmers, who need both for their crops, livestock, and fisheries. Conventional input-intensive agriculture <a href=\"https:\/\/idronline.org\/article\/climate-emergency\/climate-mitigation-can-carbon-credits-ensure-farmers-dont-pay-the-price\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">degrades topsoil and groundwater levels<\/a>. A holistic approach to farming can help us meet current farming needs while preserving natural resources for future generations. Nature-based farming solutions such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/topic\/crop-rotation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">crop rotation<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.worldagroforestry.org\/about\/agroforestry\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">agroforestry<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ceew.in\/publications\/sustainable-agriculture-india\/cover-crops-mulching\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">cover cropping<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/naturalfarming.dac.gov.in\/NaturalFarming\/Concept\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">natural farming<\/a> can improve soil health, increase crop resilience, and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Reviving traditional water harvesting systems can also enhance water and food security. Integrated <a href=\"https:\/\/idronline.org\/building-communities-through-watershed-management\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">watershed management<\/a> results in soil and water conservation, better productivity, more tree cover, and improved livelihoods.<\/p><p>These practices are crucial in India, where a large number of people are engaged in agriculture. India&rsquo;s National Mission for Sustainable Agriculture promotes sustainable agriculture such as crop rotation, agroforestry, and natural farming, which are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ceew.in\/publications\/sustainable-agriculture-india\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">growing<\/a> in India.<\/p><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading secondlevel\" id=\"h-4-green-and-blue-urban-infrastructure\">4. Green and blue urban infrastructure<\/h3><p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.orfonline.org\/research\/blue-green-infrastructure-an-opportunity-for-indian-cities\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Cities<\/a> consume 78 percent of the world&rsquo;s energy and produce more than 60 percent of all greenhouse gases. India is urbanising rapidly and, by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.orfonline.org\/research\/blue-green-infrastructure-an-opportunity-for-indian-cities\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">2050<\/a>, one in every two Indians is expected to be living in a city. We need to reduce the negative environmental impact of urban environments while also helping them adapt to the fallout of a changed climate, for example, heatwaves or storms.<\/p><p>Green&ndash;blue infrastructure involves integrating natural elements into urban environments. Blue infrastructure refers to rivers, lakes, canals, ponds, wetlands, floodplains, and water treatment facilities. Green infrastructure includes trees, parks, fields, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rhs.org.uk\/garden-features\/rain-gardens\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">rain gardens<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.merriam-webster.com\/dictionary\/bioswale\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">bioswales<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.epa.gov\/heatislands\/using-green-roofs-reduce-heat-islands\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">green roofs<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/pavementinteractive.org\/reference-desk\/pavement-types-and-history\/pavement-types\/permeable-pavements\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">permeable pavements<\/a>. These can help reduce heat island effect, recharge groundwater, and improve air quality. Urban NbS can vary in scale&mdash;building- or plot-level solutions (<a href=\"https:\/\/agritech.tnau.ac.in\/horticulture\/horti_Landscaping_vertical%20gardening.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">vertical gardens<\/a>, green roofs), area or neighbourhood solutions (<a href=\"https:\/\/sirdodisha.nic.in\/download\/Plantation.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">block plantations<\/a>, urban parks), and regional solutions (protection and restoration of urban forests, mangroves).<\/p><p>In Mumbai, the state government&rsquo;s <a href=\"https:\/\/indianexpress.com\/article\/cities\/mumbai\/bmc-to-create-urban-forest-on-3-acre-plot-in-industrial-marol-7972431\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">initiative<\/a> to create a 3.2-acre urban forest aims to address urban heat island effects, with the potential to cool temperatures in the area by up to 3 degrees C (5.4 degrees F).<\/p><h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-are-the-challenges-to-nature-based-solutions\">What are the challenges to Nature-based Solutions?<\/h3><p>There are <a href=\"https:\/\/news.mongabay.com\/2021\/10\/are-nature-based-solutions-the-silver-bullet-for-social-environmental-crises\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">dissenting opinions<\/a> on the efficacy of Nature-based Solutions. According to some experts, they require a lot of land and\/or water. The resources on which NbS projects are created are often inhabited by indigenous peoples, small-scale farmers, or other frontline communities. This perpetuates the structure that exploits marginalised communities. Meanwhile, they <a href=\"https:\/\/www.boell.de\/en\/2024\/01\/24\/nature-based-solutions-trap\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">point out<\/a> that the real culprits&mdash;gas, coal, and oil extractors&mdash;go unpunished.<\/p><p>There is also the challenge of finance. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ceew.in\/publications\/how-can-investing-in-nature-based-solutions-for-climate-change-enhance-global-climate-action\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Studies<\/a> find that while developed countries have the necessary resources to effectively implement NbS, low-income countries receive only a small fraction of investments for them. It is difficult to measure and report the impact of NbS initiatives.<\/p><p>When specific NbS projects are implemented, they should be suited to local, social, and ecological contexts. For instance, using an invasive fast-growing species may damage the native ecosystem and turn it into a monoculture. The projects should also safeguard the local community&rsquo;s needs and adaptive capacity. Respecting land tenure and forest rights, community participation, and community ownership play a key role in sustaining NbS over the long term.<\/p><p><em><a
