These are the people who are&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">striving to build and grow enterprises that&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">create<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">opportunities <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">for marginalised communities<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">. Working on the intersections of&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">profit and&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">social impact, these social entrepreneurs are&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">setting up organisations<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">&nbsp;based on new business models or unconventional&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">programmatic approaches.<\/span><span data-ccp-props='{\"201341983\":0,\"335559739\":160,\"335559740\":259}'>&nbsp;<\/span><\/p><p><span data-contrast=\"none\">A<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">s with&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">most&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">startups<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">,&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">the biggest challenge they&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">run<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">&nbsp;into is procuring<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">&nbsp;timely<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">&nbsp;funding.&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">S<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">ince their operating models and\/or programmes are not traditional<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">&nbsp;or proven<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">, most funders<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">&ndash;be they philanthropic foundations or impact investors, are<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">&nbsp;unwilling to take a bet on them. Even<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">&nbsp;funders who want to support new&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">ideas<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">&nbsp;often&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">only actively fund the straight and narrow. The<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">ecosystem&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">simply hasn&rsquo;t evolved enough&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">for&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">disruptors<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">&nbsp;like these.<\/span><span data-ccp-props='{\"201341983\":0,\"335559739\":160,\"335559740\":259}'>&nbsp;<\/span><\/p><p><span data-contrast=\"none\">My time at&nbsp;<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/unltdindia.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">UnLtd<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">&nbsp;India<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\">&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">(<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">an incubator<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">)<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">h<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">as given me an opportunity to&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">watch and guide these social entrepreneurs<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">as&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">they&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">go<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\"> along their fundraising journey&ndash;starting from <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">money given by&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">friends and family, and eventually graduating to&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">institutional funding. <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">I<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">&nbsp;ha<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">ve found that&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">a majority of them&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">neither fit&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">the&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">for-profit lending or investing archetype, nor&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">do they have a place in&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">the no<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">n<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">profit donor world.<\/span><span data-ccp-props='{\"201341983\":0,\"335559739\":160,\"335559740\":259}'>&nbsp;<\/span><\/p><div data-contrast=\"none\">Consider&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">Agro<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">&nbsp;Industries<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">*<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">, a socially motivated private limited company that works with over&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">1,0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">00 tribal farmers who have unproductive, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.encyclopedia.com\/plants-and-animals\/agriculture-and-horticulture\/agriculture-general\/fallow-land\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">fallow lands<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">Agro<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">&nbsp;is championing change through an innovative buy-back model.&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">They<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">&nbsp;educat<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">e<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">farmers<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">who otherwise work as migra<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">n<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">t labourers<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\"> to grow and cultivate eucalyptus<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">&nbsp;trees<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\"> in their previously abandoned fallow lands<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">.&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">The output is then sold to the local paper industry<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">This enables the farmers to earn&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">a&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">substantial<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">income&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">from their own lands<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">.<\/span><span data-ccp-props='{\"201341983\":0,\"335559739\":160,\"335559740\":259}'>&nbsp;<\/span><\/p><blockquote><p><span data-contrast=\"none\">For smaller investors,&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">dynamic social enterprises are<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">&nbsp;high-risk project<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">s.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote><p><span data-contrast=\"none\">The<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">re is<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">however,&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">a four-year gestation period for eucalyptus trees to grow to their full potential. To keep the farmers engaged during this period, <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">Agro<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">&nbsp;has introduced farmers to inter-cropping which provides them&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">with&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">immediate income via cash crops, and sustainable food<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">&nbsp;for themselves<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">This engagement model was proven successful when the first set of trees were cut in 2018 and another&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">1,0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">00 farmers are now interested in participating in this model.<\/span><span data-ccp-props='{\"201341983\":0,\"335559739\":160,\"335559740\":259}'>&nbsp;<\/span><\/p><p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Agro<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">&nbsp;Industries may have designed a<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">n ecologically-sound&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">solution<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">&nbsp;that&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">provides sustainable&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">livelihood<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">&nbsp;opportunities and empowers<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">farmers<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">, but the&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">lack of&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">adequate&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">initial investment<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">s<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">&nbsp;during the conversion of fallow land to productive land,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\"> training, and sourcing raw materials<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">remains<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">a constant challenge<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">&nbsp;for them<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">.<\/span><span data-ccp-props='{\"201341983\":0,\"335559739\":160,\"335559740\":259}'>&nbsp;<\/span><\/p><p><span data-contrast=\"none\">S<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">ome of the obstacles an enterprise like&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">A<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">gr<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">o<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">&nbsp;runs into when attempting to raise funds from different sources<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">&nbsp;include:<\/span><\/p><div class=\"idron-content\" id=\"idron-560500928\"><a href=\"https:\/\/idronline.org\/donate\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"donate banner\"><img src=\"https:\/\/idronline.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/Donate-banner-1.jpg\" alt=\"donate banner\"  srcset=\"https:\/\/idronline.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/Donate-banner-1.jpg 1250w, https:\/\/idronline.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/Donate-banner-1-300x60.jpg 300w, https:\/\/idronline.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/Donate-banner-1-1024x205.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/idronline.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/Donate-banner-1-150x30.jpg 150w, https:\/\/idronline.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/Donate-banner-1-768x154.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1250px) 100vw, 1250px\" width=\"1250\" height=\"250\"   \/><\/a><\/div><div class=\"second-level-subheading\">1)&nbsp;Sourcing&nbsp;government&nbsp;loans<\/div><p><span data-contrast=\"none\">While&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">the model has&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">garnered&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">interest from&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">government&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">financial&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">institutions<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">, the<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">y&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">are not allowed&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">to provide loans without any collateral. A<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">nd<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">, in the case of&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">Ag<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">r<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">o<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\"> Industries, <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">neither the trees nor the land belongs&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">them, resulting in<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">&nbsp;no assets to pledge<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">. As a result,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">no loans can be procured.&nbsp;<\/span><span data-ccp-props='{\"201341983\":0,\"335559739\":160,\"335559740\":259}'>&nbsp;<\/span><\/p><div class=\"second-level-subheading\">2)&nbsp;Approaching impact investors<\/div><p><span data-contrast=\"none\">On the equity front, impact investors are not interested, as&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">most social enterprises (like <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">Ag<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">r<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">o)<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">&nbsp;are in their<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">&nbsp;nascent stages, and&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">often built on a<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">&nbsp;service model, not a product-based&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">one<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">.&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">Also, equity comes at a much higher cost (besides potential mission drift) than is warranted for this need.<\/span><span data-ccp-props='{\"201341983\":0,\"335559739\":160,\"335559740\":259}'>&nbsp;<\/span><\/p><div class=\"second-level-subheading\">3)&nbsp;Attracting individual investors<\/div><p><span data-contrast=\"none\">For smaller investors,&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">dynamic social enterprises are<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">&nbsp;high-risk project<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">s.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">&nbsp;<\/span><span data-ccp-props='{\"201341983\":0,\"335559739\":160,\"335559740\":259}'>&nbsp;<\/span><\/p><div class=\"second-level-subheading\">4)&nbsp;Engaging with philanthropic&nbsp;foundations<\/div><p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Five or ten years ago, perhaps&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">Agro<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">&nbsp;Industries would have structured&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">its social<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">&nbsp;businesses as&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">a&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">nonprofit<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">.&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">However, raising philanthropic funds for a<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">n&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">economically viable service <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">fee-based model is counter intuitive even though<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">&nbsp;foundations and philanthropists&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">today&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">want their nonprofit partners to be&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">sustainable<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">.&nbsp;<\/span><span data-ccp-props='{\"201341983\":0,\"335559739\":160,\"335559740\":259}'>&nbsp;<\/span><\/p><blockquote><p>If a nonprofit exceeds 25 percent of its annual budget, its tax exemption status is at risk. This stipulation restricts the ability of nonprofits to be truly self-sustaining.<\/p><\/blockquote><p><span data-contrast=\"none\">In addition, in India,&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">it is not possible for organisations<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">registered as nonprofits to be sustainable in the true sense of the word<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">S<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">ustainability<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">entails an<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">&nbsp;organisation having&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">self-generated revenues that are not grant<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">&nbsp;or&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">donation dependent.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p><p><span data-contrast=\"none\">However, t<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">he law stipulates that if a no<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">n<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">profit&ndash;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">be it a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mca.gov.in\/SearchableActs\/Section8.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Section 8<\/a> company, a trust, or a society<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">&mdash;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">has a product or service-based income that exceeds 25 percent of its total annual budget, its tax exemption status is at risk. Th<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">is stipulation&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">restrict<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">s&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">the ability of nonprofits<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">&nbsp;to be<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">&nbsp;truly<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">&nbsp;self-sustaining<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">.<\/span><span data-ccp-props='{\"201341983\":0,\"335559739\":160,\"335559740\":259}'>&nbsp;<\/span><\/p><p><a class=\"sidebar-related-article\" href=\"https:\/\/idronline.org\/website-admin\/to-dib-or-not-to-dib\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Related article: To DIB or not to DIB&nbsp;<\/strong><\/a><\/p><h3><span data-contrast=\"none\">And so, I pose the question once again&mdash;where do the disrupters go?<\/span><span data-ccp-props='{\"201341983\":0,\"335559739\":160,\"335559740\":259}'>&nbsp;<\/span><\/h3><p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Between the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.britishcouncil.org\/sites\/default\/files\/social_enterprise_policy_landscape_in_india_british_council.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">regulatory framework<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\">&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">and funders who want sustainability, organisations&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">who want to&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">be innovative<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">in their business models<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">&nbsp;are left hanging, as&nbsp;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">these new innovative models struggle to compete in a funding market that is traditional, restrictive and governed by rules that serve the conformists.&nbsp;<\/span><span data-ccp-props='{\"201341983\":0,\"335559739\":160,\"335559740\":259}'>&nbsp;<\/span><\/p><p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Here are s<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">ome suggestions and recommendations<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">&nbsp;on what can be done to improve this<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">:<\/span><span data-ccp-props='{\"201341983\":0,\"335559739\":160,\"335559740\":259}'>&nbsp;<\/span><\/p><div class=\"second-level-subheading\">1) Schemes that provide guarantees<\/div><p><span data-contrast=\"none\">We need more schemes that provide guarantee cover to entrepreneurs<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">.
