Yet, the source of the water in the taps and their consumption levels, remain a mystery to most people living in the city.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><picture><source media=\"(max-width: 1366px)\" srcset=\"https:\/\/idronline.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/Image-2_overview-of-Mumbai-slums_picture-courtesy-Suraj-Katra-768x512.jpg\"><source media=\"(max-width: 1540px)\" srcset=\"https:\/\/idronline.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/Image-2_overview-of-Mumbai-slums_picture-courtesy-Suraj-Katra.jpg\"><source media=\"(max-width: 2000px)\" srcset=\"https:\/\/idronline.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/Image-2_overview-of-Mumbai-slums_picture-courtesy-Suraj-Katra.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/idronline.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/Image-2_overview-of-Mumbai-slums_picture-courtesy-Suraj-Katra.jpg\" alt=\"Image 2_overview of Mumbai slums_picture courtesy-Suraj Katra\" width=\"900\" height=\"600\"><\/source><\/source><\/source><\/picture><\/figure><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The MCGM supplies 3.8 billion litres of water daily with a tariff of <a href=\"https:\/\/indianexpress.com\/article\/cities\/mumbai\/corporators-across-party-lines-block-bmc-proposal-to-hike-water-charges-6909123\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">INR 5<\/a> for every 1,000 litres. However, an individual in an informal settlement can receive less than <a href=\"https:\/\/dash.harvard.edu\/bitstream\/handle\/1\/23845359\/4622161.pdf?sequence=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">20 litres<\/a> daily&mdash;which is below the minimum consumption level recommended by WHO. This promise, however, continues to be <a href=\"http:\/\/panihaqsamiti.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/Report-Impact-of-COVID-19-and-lockdown-on-WASH-in-Mumbais-informal-settlements-VKA-PHS-CPD-compressed.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">largely unmet<\/a>.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><picture><source media=\"(max-width: 1366px)\" srcset=\"https:\/\/idronline.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/Image-5_people-standing-on-a-stream-of-water_picture-courtesy_Suraj-Katra-768x512.jpg\"><source media=\"(max-width: 1540px)\" srcset=\"https:\/\/idronline.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/Image-5_people-standing-on-a-stream-of-water_picture-courtesy_Suraj-Katra.jpg\"><source media=\"(max-width: 2000px)\" srcset=\"https:\/\/idronline.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/Image-5_people-standing-on-a-stream-of-water_picture-courtesy_Suraj-Katra.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/idronline.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/Image-5_people-standing-on-a-stream-of-water_picture-courtesy_Suraj-Katra.jpg\" alt=\"Image 5_people standing on a stream of water washing clothes_picture courtesy_Suraj Katra\" width=\"900\" height=\"600\"><\/source><\/source><\/source><\/picture><\/figure><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Residents of Geeta Nagar (in south Mumbai) rely on an unknown leakage outlet to wash their clothes. Roughly 27 percent of the city&rsquo;s water is unaccounted for and lost to leakages, faulty meters, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.safewaternetwork.org\/sites\/default\/files\/2016_India_Urban_Sector_Review.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">unauthorised connections<\/a>. The minimum amount lost monthly is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.safewaternetwork.org\/sites\/default\/files\/2016_India_Urban_Sector_Review.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">approximately INR 2.5 crore<\/a>.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/media.giphy.com\/media\/HF5x77GPSEwbHcrpGt\/giphy.gif\" alt=\"Image 6_ a defunct water meter-water for all-picture courtesy-Suraj Katra\"><\/figure><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is common practice that water charges in residential societies are shared equally between all members. This practice makes it difficult to establish the relationship between the price paid for water and the quantity used. Pani Haq Samiti also filed a case in the high court on behalf of 33 informal settlements to urgently appeal for new water connections on humanitarian grounds. The list of paperwork demanded by the MCGM is exhaustive and includes a No Objection Certificate from the land owner, a certificate of good character by the local councillor, and proof of residence before 2000.
