This means that air pollution in India is not a problem restricted to winters in Delhi or to India&rsquo;s cities; in fact, <a href=\"https:\/\/qz.com\/1489086\/air-pollution-in-india-caused-1-2-million-deaths-last-year\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">no Indian state achieves pollution levels<\/a> at or below the World Health Organisation&rsquo;s (WHO) limits.<\/p><h3 class=\"secondlevel wp-block-heading\">2. <\/h3><p><strong>Air pollution is a leading risk factor for death:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thehindu.com\/news\/national\/air-pollution-cause-of-1-in-8-deaths\/article25682272.ece\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">One in eight deaths<\/a> in India was attributable to air pollution in 2017. Additionally, at <a href=\"https:\/\/economictimes.indiatimes.com\/news\/politics-and-nation\/mission-80-80-80-a-five-step-roadmap-for-cutting-pollution\/articleshow\/72422825.cms?from=mdr\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">1.24 million<\/a>, the deaths caused by air pollution are more than those caused by diarrhoea, tuberculosis, HIV, or malaria. The health cost of this is as high as <a href=\"https:\/\/economictimes.indiatimes.com\/news\/politics-and-nation\/mission-80-80-80-a-five-step-roadmap-for-cutting-pollution\/articleshow\/72422825.cms?from=mdr\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">USD 80 billion<\/a>.<\/p><h3 class=\"secondlevel wp-block-heading\">3. <\/h3><p><strong>The elderly are disproportionately affected:<\/strong> About half of these 1.24 million deaths are of <a href=\"https:\/\/ig.ft.com\/india-pollution\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">people over the age of 70<\/a>, making the elderly among the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.downtoearth.org.in\/blog\/air\/addressing-indoor-pollution-and-climate-change-with-fuel-efficient-cook-stoves-64933\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">most vulnerable to air pollution<\/a>, in addition to women, children, and low-income communities.<\/p><div class=\"idron-article-in-content\" style=\"margin-bottom: 15px;\" id=\"idron-2810287351\"><a href=\"https:\/\/idronline.org\/what-is-idr-answers\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"What is IDR Answers Page Banner\"><img src=\"https:\/\/idronline.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/What-is-IDR-Answers-Page-Banner-1.png\" alt=\"What is IDR Answers Page Banner\"  srcset=\"https:\/\/idronline.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/What-is-IDR-Answers-Page-Banner-1.png 1250w, https:\/\/idronline.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/What-is-IDR-Answers-Page-Banner-1-300x60.png 300w, https:\/\/idronline.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/What-is-IDR-Answers-Page-Banner-1-1024x205.png 1024w, https:\/\/idronline.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/What-is-IDR-Answers-Page-Banner-1-150x30.png 150w, https:\/\/idronline.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/What-is-IDR-Answers-Page-Banner-1-768x154.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1250px) 100vw, 1250px\" width=\"1250\" height=\"250\"   \/><\/a><\/div><h3 class=\"secondlevel wp-block-heading\">4. <\/h3><p><strong>The average life expectancy of a child<\/strong> <strong>is reduced <\/strong>by at least <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cprindia.org\/news\/7874\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">2.6 years<\/a>. Additionally, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.livemint.com\/Politics\/rDHZvyTATN6AXUrDLQn2TN\/Air-pollution-causing-one-death-in-ten-among-children-WHO.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">10 percent<\/a> of all under-five deaths in 2016 were caused by worsening air quality.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image alignnone wp-image-16346 size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/idronline.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/Mumbai-air-pollution-at-dawn_Flickr_resized.jpg\" alt=\"Mumbai air pollution at dawn-air quality\" class=\"wp-image-16346\"><figcaption>22 of the 30 most polluted cities in the world are in India. | Photo courtesy: Flickr<\/figcaption><\/figure><h3 class=\"secondlevel wp-block-heading\">5. <\/h3><p><strong>Low-income populations<\/strong> <strong>are <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.unenvironment.org\/news-and-stories\/story\/air-pollution-hurts-poorest-most\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>overexposed<\/strong><\/a> to causes of air pollution because they do not possess the financial strength to defend themselves against it. This is because of four reasons:<\/p><ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>They typically cannot afford to live in relatively safe or upwind residential areas, away from industry and powerplants.<\/li><li>They <a href=\"https:\/\/www.livemint.com\/Politics\/1upGrRoENNFjYh224xT8fK\/Indias-poor-on-the-frontlines-of-Indias-polarizing-pollut.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">cannot afford new technology<\/a> such as air purifiers and appropriate face masks.<\/li><li>They often have to take up jobs in mining, traffic management, or work as industrial labourers which overexposes them to higher amounts of particulate matter.<\/li><li>They are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pnas.org\/content\/116\/22\/10614\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">reliant on polluting fuels<\/a> such as wood, dung, or kerosene for cooking and heating.<\/li><\/ul><h3 class=\"secondlevel wp-block-heading\">6. <\/h3><p><strong>It is a public health emergency: <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cprindia.org\/news\/7874\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">New research<\/a> indicates that air pollution impacts birth weight, child growth, obesity, and bladder cancer. There is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cprindia.org\/news\/7874\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">growing evidence<\/a> of the adverse impacts of pollution on cognitive abilities in children.<\/p><h3 class=\"secondlevel wp-block-heading\">7.<\/h3><p><strong>Rural India is being sidelined:<\/strong> Of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.livemint.com\/Opinion\/JQChQGcj7zooBVYDx09SVO\/Opinion--Rural-Indias-ignored-air-pollution-problem.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">600-plus air quality monitoring stations<\/a> the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) set up across the country, there are none in rural areas. The <a href=\"https:\/\/economictimes.indiatimes.com\/news\/politics-and-nation\/mission-80-80-80-a-five-step-roadmap-for-cutting-pollution\/articleshow\/72422825.cms?from=mdr\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">lack of adequate monitoring<\/a> and measurement systems leaves the air quality challenges in rural India uncovered.<\/p><h3 class=\"secondlevel wp-block-heading\">8.<\/h3><p><strong>Efforts aren&rsquo;t reaching the people who need them the most:<\/strong> 49 of the 54 (90 percent) organised citizen mobilisations on air pollution in 2019 occurred in urban areas.<sup><a href=\"#footnotes\">1<\/a><\/sup> However, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vox.com\/2018\/5\/8\/17316978\/india-pollution-levels-air-delhi-health\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">75 percent of the deaths<\/a> linked to air pollution (in 2015) occurred in rural areas.<\/p><div class=\"idron-content\" id=\"idron-425185856\"><a href=\"https:\/\/idronline.org\/donate\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"donate banner\"><img src=\"https:\/\/idronline.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/Donate-banner-1.jpg\" alt=\"donate banner\"  srcset=\"https:\/\/idronline.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/Donate-banner-1.jpg 1250w, https:\/\/idronline.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/Donate-banner-1-300x60.jpg 300w, https:\/\/idronline.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/Donate-banner-1-1024x205.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/idronline.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/Donate-banner-1-150x30.jpg 150w, https:\/\/idronline.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/Donate-banner-1-768x154.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1250px) 100vw, 1250px\" width=\"1250\" height=\"250\"   \/><\/a><\/div><h3 class=\"secondlevel wp-block-heading\">9.<\/h3><p><strong>Information about it is inaccessible:<\/strong> 84 percent of the total media coverage on air pollution is in English. <sup><a href=\"#footnotes\">2<\/a><\/sup><\/p><h3 class=\"secondlevel wp-block-heading\">10.<\/h3><p><strong>India has more polluted cities than any other country: <\/strong>22 of the 30 most polluted cities in the world <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/cities\/2019\/mar\/05\/india-home-to-22-of-worlds-30-most-polluted-cities-greenpeace-says\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">are in India<\/a>, and almost <a href=\"https:\/\/ig.ft.com\/india-pollution\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">99 percent of Indians<\/a> breathe air that is above the WHO&rsquo;s defined safety limits.<\/p><p class=\"#footnotes\">&mdash;<\/p><h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Footnotes:<\/strong><\/h4><ol class=\"wp-block-list\" id=\"block-96cd25ff-c2cf-4f0a-b13c-77dc34c79b5a\"><li>Dalberg analysis on Times of India coverage on air pollution in 2019.
