Individual foundations, such as the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rsclark.org\/blog\/2020\/3\/16\/supporting-our-grantee-partners-in-the-era-of-covid-19\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Robert Sterling Clark Foundation<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fordfoundation.org\/ideas\/equals-change-blog\/posts\/a-message-of-support-for-our-grantees\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ford Foundation<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.macfound.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">MacArthur Foundation<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rockefellerfoundation.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Rockefeller Foundation<\/a> in the US, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.omidyarnetwork.in\/blog\/supporting-our-partners-in-navigating-the-current-environment\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Omidyar Network India<\/a>&nbsp;and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.edelgive.org\/blogs?p_p_id=Edelgive_Blogs_portlet_Edelgive_BlogsPortlet_INSTANCE_HfbMsH39yH1p&amp;p_p_lifecycle=0&amp;p_p_state=normal&amp;p_p_mode=view&amp;p_p_col_id=column-1&amp;p_p_col_pos=1&amp;p_p_col_count=2&amp;_Edelgive_Blogs_portlet_Edelgive_BlogsPortlet_INSTANCE_HfbMsH39yH1p_jspPage=%2Fblog_detail.jsp&amp;_Edelgive_Blogs_portlet_Edelgive_BlogsPortlet_INSTANCE_HfbMsH39yH1p_blogId=1507704\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Edelgive Foundation<\/a> in India, are also communicating their flexibility to grantees.<\/p><p>\n<div id=\"attachment_18025\" style=\"width: 1034px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-18025\" class=\"wp-image-18025 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/idronline.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/children-walking-together_covid19_phinathropy.jpg\" alt=\"children walking together_covid19_phinathropy_funding organisations_ Picture courtesy: Pxfuel\" width=\"1024\" height=\"682\"><p id=\"caption-attachment-18025\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Please reach out to your grantees and partners to ascertain the urgent challenges they are confronting, and to provide reassurance of your support. | Picture courtesy: Pxfuel<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><p>Here are five things funders around the world are doing to help their partners cope with this crisis. These are steps worth emulating.<\/p><ol>\n<li>Have check-in conversations with your grantees to help them prioritise the health and safety of their teams, and plan for the continuity of their organisations and programmes.<\/li>\n<li>Be open to converting current project grants to general support funding to permit agility in partners&rsquo; responses to the needs of their staff and the communities they serve. Don&rsquo;t take back grant funds that were allocated to events or activities that have had to be cancelled due to COVID-19.<\/li>\n<li>Be open to changing the payment schedule for your grant. Better still, proactively disburse funds that are due over the next six months.<\/li>\n<li>Collaborate with other donors to share learnings and best practices on how best to ensure that partners and communities make it through the situation. Share information across your networks to amplify learning and advocacy.<\/li>\n<li>Look beyond your grantees to the communities they serve. Ask what their communities need to help them enhance their disaster planning and emergency readiness. This could include measures to provide protective material and services, provide income and material support, mitigate the impact of closure of schools and workplaces, disseminate public education messages in languages and via channels most likely to reach vulnerable populations, adapt current programmes to the new realities of social distancing, and invest in building capacity to access multiple sources of funding and to raise resources online.<\/li>\n<\/ol><p>In India, the advocacy role that funders can play is especially critical at this time. These could be regarding the need to extend deadlines for statutory filings, as well as for urgent measures in vulnerable communities, such as those advocated by the <a href=\"https:\/\/indianexpress.com\/article\/coronavirus\/mumbai-slums-coronavirus-6321068\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Housing and Land Rights Network and the Paani Haq Samiti<\/a>, in Mumbai.<\/p><blockquote><p>Every donor asset counts: your voice, networks, influence, skills, and human resources.<\/p><\/blockquote><p>Even as funders and partners are scrambling to respond to COVID-19, we are confronted by a set of <a href=\"https:\/\/scroll.in\/article\/952149\/ngos-fear-more-harassment-as-modi-government-changes-rules-for-registrations\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">policy changes proposed in the Finance Bill 2020<\/a>&nbsp;and in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.prsindia.org\/billtrack\/companies-amendment-bill-2019\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">draft changes to the CSR<\/a> component of the Companies Act.
