{"id":2055,"date":"2020-10-17T10:30:33","date_gmt":"2020-10-17T10:30:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/idronline.org\/2020\/12\/23\/the-roots-of-organisational-well-being-nonprofits-systemic-racism-inequality-diversity\/"},"modified":"2025-11-11T08:55:18","modified_gmt":"2025-11-11T03:25:18","slug":"the-roots-of-organisational-well-being-nonprofits-systemic-racism-inequality-diversity","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/idronline.org\/kn-in\/the-roots-of-organisational-well-being-nonprofits-systemic-racism-inequality-diversity\/","title":{"rendered":"The roots of organisational well-being"},"content":{"rendered":"<?xml encoding=\"utf-8\" ?><p>Although more and more organizations are taking steps toward greater diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) in the workplace, people of color <a href=\"https:\/\/www.catalyst.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/emotionaltax.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">continue to consistently report<\/a>&nbsp;feeling undervalued, unsafe, and exhausted from navigating unwelcoming work environments. They see&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.scientificamerican.com\/article\/how-to-think-about-implicit-bias\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">implicit biases<\/a>&nbsp;play out as&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2020\/06\/08\/872371063\/microaggressions-are-a-big-deal-how-to-talk-them-out-and-when-to-walk-away\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">micro-aggressions<\/a>&nbsp;(such as consistently mispronouncing one&rsquo;s name, confusing one person of color for another, or showing surprise that a person of color is the leader) and experience blatant racist behaviors, such as being the target of racial slurs.&nbsp;People of color also experience more negative outcomes related to hiring, promotions, terminations, and performance evaluations than their white peers.&nbsp;Many remain silent about these experiences&nbsp;for fear of not being believed and losing employment.<\/p><p>These experiences and outcomes are signs of an unhealthy work environment that devalues DEI, and we know that&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.annualreviews.org\/doi\/full\/10.1146\/annurev-clinpsy-032814-112728#_i5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">repeated exposure<\/a>&nbsp;to an unhealthy workplace takes a physical and emotional toll on workers.
