लग्नानंतर मी अहमदाबादला गेले तेव्हा मी आणि माझे पती गुजरातमधील मेघानी नगर येथील मद्रासिनी चाळीत राहत होतो. आम्हाला स्वच्छ पिण्याचे पाणी किंवा वैयक्तिक शौचालये यासारख्या आवश्यक सुविधा मिळत नव्हत्या, तसेच आमच्याकडे वीजही नव्हती. ज्या घरांमध्ये वीज मीटर होते ती घरे बेकायदेशीरपणे 10-15 इतर घरांना कनेक्शन विकत असत. यापैकी बहुतेक घरांमध्ये तीन ते चार वीजेचे पॉइंट होते आणि ते स्थानिक पुरवठादाराला 400 रुपये (प्रति पॉइंट 100 रुपये) देत होते.<\/p>

या बेकायदेशीर कनेक्शनची माहिती असल्याने दक्षता विभाग परिसरात वारंवार छापे टाकत असे. परिणामी, आमचे कनेक्शन नियमितपणे कापले जात होते. परिसरातील इतर अनेक महिलांप्रमाणे, मी घरून काम करत असे. मी बिंदी पॅक करत असे आणि दिवसाला 100-150 रुपये कमवत असे. मात्र, वीज गेली की त्या दिवशी मी काम करू शकत नसल्यामुळे मला दरमहा 400-500 रुपये कमी पडत असत.<\/p>

मी महिला हौसिंग ट्रस्ट (MHT) सोबत देखील काम करत होते जे अनेक मूलभूत सुविधा पुरवतात. 2001 मध्ये, त्यांच्या झोपडपट्टी विद्युतीकरण कार्यक्रमाद्वारे<\/a>, आम्ही 1 लाख घरांमध्ये मीटरने वीज जोडणी मिळवली. मात्र, कायदेशीर मीटरने जोडणी घेतल्यानंतरही, लोक त्यांचे दिवे आणि पंखे मुक्तपणे वापरत राहिले कारण त्यांना 400 रुपये मासिक शुल्काची सवय झाली होती. त्यानंतर त्यांचे बिल दुप्पट आल्याचे पाहून त्यांना धक्का बसला.<\/p>
