Before starting their daily meeting, the members of Gowli Mahila Sangathan, a village collective set up by the women of Gowli in Uttarakhand, sit together and sing songs of courage, ambition, and resistance. The group is led by Pushpa Punekar, who has been at the forefront of the resistance movement against alcoholism in the hilly area of the state since 1995.
We met the collective as part of our Rural Research Programme at St Stephen’s College, Delhi and spoke to them about the problems they face due to climate change and how they sustain their livelihoods, among other things.
