Centre, Nagaland, and World Bank sign up for USD 68 million project to improve education in the state

Education: The World Bank has approved a USD 68 million education project with the Government of India and the Nagaland state government. This project will strengthen governance of schools, and improve teaching practices and learning environments in select schools across Nagaland.

The ‘Nagaland: Enhancing Classroom Teaching and Resources Project’ aims to improve classroom instruction, create opportunities for the professional development of teachers, and build technology systems for students and teachers. It will also provide schools access to blended and online learning, and allow for better monitoring of policies and programmes, according to a statement by the finance ministry.

About 150,000 students and 20,000 teachers in the government education system are expected to benefit from the reforms initiated by the state.

Nagaland’s education system currently faces challenges of poor school infrastructure, lack of opportunities for the professional development of teachers, and limited capacity on the part of communities to partner effectively with the school system. This has been further exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic, which has placed additional stress on the system.

The USD 68 million funding for this programme is structured as a 14.5 year loan from the International Bank of Reconstruction and Development

Even before the pandemic, Indian schools saw high dropout rates and declining enrolment rates. Read this article to know more.
