Ministry of Labour seeks Aadhaar details from those registered under the Social Security Code 2020

Livelihoods: The Ministry of Labour and Employment will start asking for Aadhaar card details from employees and unorganised sector workers seeking registration, benefits, or availing services under the Social Security Code 2020. However, they will not be denied services under the various social security schemes offered by the ministry if they are unable to provide their Aadhaar details.

The central government issued a notification to this effect on May 3rd, 2021. It mandates that the labour ministry and its associate bodies seek Aadhaar details from people registered under the Social Security Code 2020.

“Now, we will start asking for Aadhaar numbers from beneficiaries under the Social Security Code. This is also required for our database for unorganised sector workers, including migrant workers. However, the delivery of services under various social security schemes would not be denied due to non-submission of Aadhaar,” Labour Secretary, Apurva Chandra, told PTI.

The secretary was referring to the National Database for Unorganised Workers which is at an advanced stage of development by the National Informatics Centre. Through this portal, inter-state migrants will be able to register themselves solely on the basis of their Aadhaar.
