From hunters to nest protectors: Why the Nyishi tribe saves hornbills
Increased income from tourism is only one reason that the Nyishis of Arunachal are conserving hornbills; their primary motivation is to save their tribe’s identity.
Budhiram Tai is the gaonbura (village headman) of Darlong village, Seijosa, in Arunachal Pradesh’s Pakke-Kessang district. He has been associated with the Hornbill Nest Adoption Program since its inception in 2011–12. He continues to meticulously note down observations at hornbill nest trees and roost sites that he monitors each year. Budhiram also actively engages in sensitising and motivating local community members to conserve natural resources.
