Rights: The proposed 210 MW hydroelectric project on Umngot, considered India’s clearest river, has met with stiff resistance from villages in Meghalaya. On April 9th, hundreds of people from more than a dozen villages obstructed Meghalaya State Pollution Control Board (MSPCB) officials from conducting a public hearing on the dam at Moosakhia in West Jaintia Hills district.
As many as 13 villages along the Umngot are likely to lose 296 hectares of land due to submergence if the dam comes up. The Umngot river is so clear that the boats appear to float on the surface, and the area attracts many tourists to Dawki bordering Bangladesh. Local residents depend on income generated by tourism to sustain their lives. Given this, villagers fear that the project would destroy their livelihoods, besides affecting many villages in the downstream areas dependent on the river.
Amid the opposition, however, residents of at least four villages have come out in support of the dam.
