Will Sikkim’s eco-restoration drive repeat old mistakes?
Sikkim is replacing dhupi in its reserved forests with ecologically beneficial trees. To avoid another monoculture, it can learn from its own history.

Ithihaas Ravichandran is the co-founder of Uyirmei MATO Foundation, a Section 8 organisation working with forest-dependent communities along the Tarey Bhir ridgeline in South Sikkim. He is a rural development practitioner and researcher working at the intersection of agroecology, ecological economics, and community-led livelihoods. Over four years, Ithihaas has worked with Barefoot College, IFMR, Dakshin Foundation, and the SBI Youth for India Fellowship. He holds an MA in Economics.
