Indigenous to Dzongu, Sikkim’s Lepcha community has long opposed hydropower projects, fearing their impact on the fragile ecology amid worsening climate change.
Mayalmit Lepcha is an activist, president of the Sikkim Lepcha Indigenous Tribal Association, and general secretary of the Affected Citizens of Teesta. Mayalmit works on land rights, gender, and child welfare. Her advocacy work extends to climate change and sustainability in Sikkim, where she runs a small homestay.
