Power to the people: Citizen-led activism in Govandi
Residents felt that nonprofit efforts in Mumbai's Govandi had yielded little change. Now a citizen-led organisation is tackling civic issues and starting to win legal battles.

Shaikh Faiyaz Alam serves as the president of Govandi New Sangam Welfare Society, a nonprofit committed to empowering urban slum communities and addressing sanitation, climate change, and civic issues in the Govandi area of Mumbai. Faiyaz holds a BE (Mechanical) from Mumbai University and is currently pursuing an LLB at the same institution.
