Advocacy & Government: India has been ranked 139 among 149 countries in the World Happiness Report 2021, much lower than its neighbours Bangladesh and Pakistan. In the report which was recently released by the United Nations Sustainable Development Solutions Network, Finland held the top spot once again as the world’s happiest country.
The report ranks the 149 countries on the basis of how happy their citizens perceive themselves to be. This year the UN body also focussed on the effects of COVID-19 on the population of a country, and how respective governments had dealt with the pandemic.
In 2019, India was ranked 140 in the happiness index.
Finland is followed by Iceland, Denmark, Switzerland, The Netherlands, Sweden, Germany, and Norway.
Among the Asian countries, Pakistan is 105th, Bangladesh 101st, and China has a ranking of 84. People in war-torn Afghanistan are the ‘most unhappy’ with their lives, followed by South African countries such as Zimbabwe (148), Rwanda (147), Botswana (146), and Lesotho (145).
The happiness study ranks countries on the basis of questions from the Gallup World Poll, which tracks issues such as food access, employment, leadership performance, and well-being across 160 countries. The results are then correlated with other factors, including gross domestic product and social security.
