Education: The Supreme Court’s ruling that parents will have to pay 100 percent of school fees for the academic year 2020-21 has come as a shock to families.
The Supreme Court gave the interim order based on a petition filed by four institutions in Rajasthan—Vidya Bhavan Society, Sawai Mansingh Vidyalaya, Gandhi Seva Sadan, and the Society of Catholic Education Institutions—which challenged the fee-regulation act 2016.
Parents recalled how they had to shift their children from private to government schools due to reduced family incomes. They expressed their anguish that the Supreme Court had failed to take into account job losses and salary cuts before pronouncing its judgement in favour of the schools.
According to the judgement, the school fees for the academic year 2020-21 will be the same as those paid during 2019-20. Parents will have to pay fees from March 5th, 2021; this can be collected by the schools in six instalments. However, the Supreme Court also clarified that if fees are not deposited, schools cannot omit the child’s name from their institutions, and cannot deny students of grades 10 and 12 from sitting for their board examinations.
