Health: Kerala’s Labour Department has announced that migrant workers will get free vaccination along with the rest of the population. Most of the workers are in the 18-45 age group, making them eligible for vaccinations in the third phase, which starts May 1st, 2021.
Information regarding free vaccination is being disseminated in four languages—Hindi, Bengali, Odiya, and Assamese—on social media groups that are accessed by migrants. The state will also deploy its 101 Assistant Labour Officers (ALOs) to help the migrant community register for vaccines on the Co-Win platform.
“We are exploring the scope for special centres for the vaccination of migrant workers. This will depend on the availability of vaccine and the practicality of such centres. Else, they will be vaccinated along with others in the common centres,” said S. Chithra, the state Labour Commissioner.
The Labour Department is also in the process of updating the data on migrants in the state after their return post last year’s lockdown. The ALOs and the District Labour Officers are collecting this data through licensed contractors, as well as directly from migrants.
